The Wolverhampton Heart and Lung Centre is a state-of -the-art, purpose-built unit that opened in October 2004. It provides surgical and cardiological treatment of cardiac and lung disease to a population of over 1.3 million in and around the Black Country. Approximately 850 cardiac surgeries are performed each year with excellent results.

To ensure our interdisciplinary team gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to deal with emergencies post cardiac surgery, we run a Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS) course twice a year and recently joined the national CALS scheme in 2019.

Candidates undertaking our CALS course gain access to CALS e-learning modules, a CALS manual and our one day course that is supported by a faculty consisting of anaesthetists, surgeons, nurses, perfusionists, advanced critical care practitioners and theatre staff.

The course is aimed at surgeons, anaesthetists, Intensive Care Nurses, theatre nurses, Operating Department Practitioners, Cardiothoracic ward nurses and Advanced Nurse Practitioners caring for patients post cardiac surgery. The one day course includes didactic lectures, workstations and simulated scenarios and aims to empower team members to act with confidence to better treat our critically ill cardiac patients usingvalidated cardiac arrest protocols. It also looks at developing collaborative team working across health professions to ensure high quality patient care and outcomes by improving both technical and non-technical skills.
