Overview
Certification and recertification processes within the Cardiac Surgical Unit Advanced Life Support (CALS) programme are fundamental to maintaining clinical excellence, instructional integrity, and patient safety across all participating Centres of Excellence (COEs). These processes ensure that both provider candidates and faculty members meet CALS Australia PTY LTD standards through structured education, performance assessments, and continued professional development.
Provider Certfification
- All CALS provider candidates must be registered healthcare professionals or in training for a professional role, typically in cardiothoracic critical care, theatres, or acute settings.
-
Prior to attending the face-to-face course, candidates must:
- Access all CALS eLearning modules via the CALS digital platform.
- Present a completed eLearning certificate to their Course Administrator.
- Read the CALS course manual.
- The face-to-face CALS Provider Course (CC) comprises hands-on simulations, practical skill stations, and protocol-guided scenarios.
- Completion of all modules and successful assessment of knowledge and skills are mandatory to receive the CALS Provider Certificate, which is valid for two years.
Provider Recertfification
-
Recertification requires:
- Completion of the CALS revalidation eLearning programme (annually).
- A full re-attendance of the CALS face-to-face course every two years.
- Candidates must again complete all assessment elements. Attendance alone is insufficient.
Instructor Training Pathway
-
Instructor certification involves:
- Successful nomination or voluntary application post-provider course and then Completion of the CALS Train the Trainer (TTT) course.
- Delivery of two satisfactory teaching practices on accredited CALS courses, under faculty supervision.
-
During teaching placements, Instructor Candidates (ICs) must:
- Lead practical skill sessions and deliver a lecture.
- Be supervised throughout.
- Instructor status is granted following successful completion of two IC placements and receipt of a satisfactory Course Director’s report. In exceptional cases, full instructor status may be granted after one teaching practice if unanimously agreed by faculty.
Instructor Recertification
- Instructor certification is valid for four years.
-
Recertification requires:
- Attendance and active teaching on at least four CALS courses during the four-year cycle.
- Assessment as an Instructor Candidate during one of the courses.
- Submission of recertification paperwork to CALS Australia PTY LTD.
- Lapsed instructors must complete a designated Lapsed Instructor Form and may have their instructor status reinstated subject to faculty approval and performance reassessment.
- Importantly, provider certification becomes invalid if the instructor certificate lapses.
- CALS Australia PTY LTD recommends that all instructors attend at least one TTT course during each certification cycle and maintain a record of professional development activities.
Governance and Oversight
- All certification activities are overseen by CALS Australia PTY LTD.
- Faculty composition, course structure, and candidate tracking are strictly monitored.
- Course Directors and Medical Directors are responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and reporting to CALS Australia PTY LTD within one week post-course.
