St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is a 548-bed, award-winning academic teaching hospital and tertiary care center providing specialized care not typically available at community hospitals (Level 1 Trauma and Certified Stroke Center designations and specialty programs such as cardiac surgery and a neonatal ICU). Located near Ann Arbor, Michigan, it is one of several large teaching institutions in the suburban Detroit area, participating in the education of all medical and nursing disciplines and students of those disciplines.

The teaching mission of St. Joes is supported by an interdisciplinary clinical simulation program. Unique in its interdisciplinary focus, the program boasts a state-of-the-art simulation center where all healthcare providers and students gather in a "safe" environment to practice technical skills, teamwork, and effective communication. The center was opened in May of 2014 and later that year began training providers in the care of cardiac surgery patients requiring resternotomy in the setting of postoperative cardiac arrest. These training sessions occur monthly, rotating nurses and RTs through the course every two years; first responder PAs/NPs - who cover patients 24/7 - rotate annually. In 2018 the program achieved CSU-ALS Center of Excellence status, opening its training sessions to teams from other hospitals. These external courses are currently offered on a quarterly basis, welcoming participants from multiple institutions throughout Michigan and the upper Midwest.
