Dr. Josh Pillemer

The team at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) have been delivering the CALS Course since 2018, training our own internal staff along with doctors and nurses from across Australia. Our faculty is comprised of experienced doctors and nurses in Intensive Care and Cardiothoracic Surgery, who bring a wealth of knowledge and insight to their educational sessions.
We have access to state-of-the art equipment to best facilitate the learning of our attendees (including a large conference room, pacing simulators, advanced airway and resternotomy manikins), and we heavily utilise our in-situ simulation room (in a real clinical bedspace with full remote viewing capability) to provide high fidelity simulation training.

Bringing CALS to RNSH has resulted in a number of improvements in our clinical practice. We have redesigned our resternotomy trolley, integrated bedside resources, and developed training materials to ensure that our staff remain well prepared to manage the arrested cardiac surgical patient. We are always keen to discuss with course attendees how we can facilitate rolling out CALS in their own hospitals.

Our multidisciplinary course has received excellent feedback to date, and we look forward to welcoming many more attendees in the future!
